Notes for Hynrich Walers:

Die Familienkunde des alten Amtes Harsefeld (Genealogy of the former Harsefeld district) explains: "In the 16th and 17th century, the family name Wohlers was widespread in northern Lower Saxony, especially the spellings Wolder, Woler, Wöler and Wolderdes. In most cases, it is derived from an old personal name. In the 16th and 17th century, in some localities around Bremen, the names Woler, Wohler and Wohlert were common given names. They derive from the old German personal name Waldhar ( OHG waldan, waltan "rule" + OHG heri "army" ). The above-mentioned inhabitants of Harsefeld district may have been named after the village, Wohlerst, though." <The village name, first mentioned in 1341 as Wolderstede, means Walter's place.> -- I don't recall where I picked up this particular Hynrich Walers. The antique spelling indicates that it came from some original document. Hinrich would be a good match too, since the grandson is Hinrich again.

Peter was possibly, but not necessarily, an offspring from the farm in Bredenbeck. He lived in nearby Harsefeld.

Notes for Johan Wolerß:

For 1570, FKdaAH shows a farmer Johan Wolers on a "half" farm in Bredenbeck. FKdaAH states that a half farm in that area usually had about 40 acres. -- For 1581, FKdaAH also shows a Johan Wolerß in Bredenbeck and a Peter Woler in Harsefeld. Both were most likely farmers or master craftsmen, since the older books don't bother with farmhands and laborers which were there certainly too. -- Extrapolating and assuming ages, Johan in Bredenbeck would have been born about 1540/45.

Notes for Hinrich Wolers:

FKdaAH mentions a farmhand Hinrich Wolers in Bredenbeck in 1597. No other Wohlers are shown for any other village. Since the Wohlers family in Bredenbeck goes back to 1570, at least, Hinrich may have been the heir but was still too young to run the farm. Extrapolation of ages would make him just a little over 20 years old.

The tax roll of 1647 shows a farmer (Baumann) Johan Wohlerß in Reith. Extrapolating from his successors, he would have been born around 1600.

Notes for Hinrich Wohlerß:

Hinrich is not proven to have come from the farm in Bredenbeck, but it is highly possible. In 1682, he was a Brinkkötner in Bargstedt. Nowadays, we would call that a truck farmer, on the edge of town. As such, he owned a cottage and a few acres of arable land, but he probably also had another profession to feed his family.

7. Johan⁵ Wohlersen (Johan⁴ Wohlerß thon Bredenbeke, Hinrich³ Wolers, Johan² Wolerß, Hynrich¹ Walers) was born ca 1635 in Bredenbeck; Müller in Bredenbeck, and died 29 May 1684 in Bredenbeck.

Notes for Johan Wohlersen:

It is not proven that this Johan is the correct one, but he is the farmer in Bredenbeck (=Reith), which makes him father or uncle to the following. -- The land militia roll of 1682 shows a Johan Wohlersen in Reith, farmer, 46 years old. He would have been born about 1636, or earlier. There also were a Hinrich Wohlerß, cottager in Bargstedt, 48, with son Peter, 24; and a farmer Clauß Wohlerß, 41, in Kakerstedt. Both of those lines appear in 1682 for the first time and continue in 1710. Chances are that they are offsprings from the Bredenbeck farm.

Notes for Clauß Wohlerß:

Also for Clauß: There is no evidence for his filiation, other than that he fits in well, agewise. In 1682, he appears as a farmer (Baumann) in Kakerbeck, 41 years old. He seems to have married comfortably. -- In 1710, he is still running his farm, 80 years old (maybe a closed 60 misread as 80?), with help from two of his adult sons. The farm is shown as a quarter farm, i.e. has about 20 acres.

He married Hebbel Duden 08 Sep 1697 in Bargstedt, daughter of Johann Duden. She was born 01 Mar 1674 in Wohlerst, and died 08 Feb 1751 in Bredenbeck.

Notes for Johann Wohlers:

The land militia roll of 1710 shows the following "Wohlersten" heads of household: Three cottagers, Hinrich, 42, Johann, 41, and Michel, 30, in Bargstedt; Claus, 80, on a quarter hide in Kakerstedt, with sons Peter, 28, and Claus, 25; and a Johan, 50, farmer in Wohlerst <sic>. While the ages are all highly suspect anyway, here the place name of Wohlerst appears in error, or the farm in Bredenbeck-Reith would have been in somebody else's name. Since they were no Wohlers in the village of Wohlerst in other rolls, this last Johan must be the right one. -- Johan Wohlersten (or Wohlerßen?) would have been born in or before 1660. This agrees with the 1672 birth year of Johan's widow Hebbel who was buried in 1651.

The 1735 inventory for Börde Mulsum shows Johan Wohlerst in Reith, having 1 house, 1 side house. Bredenbeck and Reith are adjacent, with Reith having more houses, so Bredenbeck occasionally lost its identity. -- The 1740 consumption (tax) roll for Reith shows: #2 - Johann Wohlerst with 1 wife, 8 children, 1 farmhand, and 1 maid, as well as #11 - Johann Wohlerst with only 1 wife. -- It would appear that the first entry is the junior, the second one his father (and mother) living in the side house on the farm.

Der Verstorbene hatte ein Alter von 64 Jahren erreicht; er wurde in der Provinz Hannover, Deutschland, geboren und war im Jahre 1885 nach Amerika gekommen. Anfänglich arbeitete er an der Chicago und North Western Bahn, verzog dann auf eine Farm in Boomer Township und erwarb sich nach mehreren Jahren eine Heimstätte, die er jahrelang bebaute. Richard Meyer was born in 1866 in Rothenstein, now in Thuringia, back then in the grandduchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. From his mother's diary it appears that the only excitement in town history were occasional flooding from the Saale river and the annual fairs in downstream Jena. Sometimes, drunk students from the university in Jena would get off the train and add some entertainment.

We have a school picture of Richard as a boy, about 1874. From oral tradition we know that he learned the butcher trade from his father. From his mother's diary we hear that he did two years of military service in Strasburg, from which we have the souvenir handkerchief that resembles a military manual. About 1886, 20-year old Richard left for Hamburg: He was intent on emigrating to America but did not get further than Scotland. When he returned home one time, his pious mother recorded that he had become a "genuwine socialist" (ein ächter Socialdemokrat) and she prayed a lot for his soul.

In Hamburg, or nearby Altona, he hired on as a Heizer (stoker). For the rest of his life, he sailed the shores of North Sea and Baltic Sea, Scotland to Königsberg. Once, on liberty in Cuxhaven, he was smooching under the bedroom window of Lotte Wohlers, who started scolding him, and they became acquainted. At Christmas time in 1893, they married in Altona and made their home there. His photos seem to switch from having the tips of his moustache twirled up, to the walrus look...

Lotte was petite and Richard the size of a door. Nevertheless, she had the pants on: It is said (Meta Sch.) that she had a very sharp tongue, and she liked to embarrass you by teasing perfect strangers in public. Another time, he got the better of her, when her gabbing got just too much: "If you don't shut up right away, I'll jump on the table", he said. And so he did. She learned from having a Japanese table.

From 1893 to 1901, the marriage remained childless. From an earlier friendship, Richard had an illegitimate daughter in Hamburg whom they tried to adopt. We don't know the name. We also don't know the reason why the adoption failed but in 1901 they finally had a baby girl, whom they named Lotte after the mother. In 1904, Richard junior was born at 11 Marthastrasse. At some time, they also lived in the Seilerstrasse.

In 1893, Richard hired on with the Hamburg-Amerika-Linie (HAPAG Lloyd) as a machinist. We have a medal honoring his 25 years of faithful service and suspect he worked there until retirement. As a machinist and social democrat, he was a member of the "Verbd. d. M. H. u. B. Hbg" (maybe, Verband der Maschinisten, Heizer und B... in Hamburg = Association of Machinists, Stokers and ... in Hamburg) and what appears to be a social circle of peers, Klub Freundschaft (Friendship Club). From the association, we have a lapel pin with a proper red carnation sash. From the club, there exists a photo of a boat excursion.

In Xxxx, Richard acquired the Hamburg citizenship. We have copies of his oath of allegiance and his naturalization record. This actually may have been the time when he moved from Prussian Altona into the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Somebody needs to check out the old addresses; I don't have them; it all became Greater Hamburg in 1938.

Richard junior followed in his father's footsteps as a sailor. About 1920, he also must have hired on. We have a costly two-volume book with pictorial atlas, entitled 'Die Praxis des modernen Maschinenbaus' (Applied Modern Machine Design), printed in 1920, which may have been a gift to him. He went on to become a 2nd Officer in the merchant marine and went down in 1936, on MS Isis in a sudden storm in the Bay of Biskaye.

Daughter Lotte was a sickly child, fighting tuberculosis most of her life. She worked some as a records clerk. That's how she met her future husband Heini Bahr. They got married in 1925 and lived with her parents at 114 Reeperbahn, 2nd floor, left, "behind the star". Grandson Jürgen was born there. It's not the best address, in the middle of the St. Pauli red-light district. They soon moved on.

The nicest picture we have of the Meyer family is in their garden on the Elbchaussee, parents, daughter and grandson. This must have been in the summer of 1929, when they had no backyard in town. The Elbchaussee runs out west, so it may have been while they lived on the Reeperbahn. Jürgen looks about 2 years old.

Around 1930, there is an address of 8 Oktaviostrasse, and one in Schlageterstrasse, both on the East side in Prussian Wandsbek. The villa in the Oktaviostrasse belonged to an elderly widow who retained the upper floor for herself.

In Wandsbek, granddaughter Lotti was born in June '31 and Lotte Wohlers died in November '31. Son-in-law Heinrich finally bought the tract house at 8 Schimmelmannstrasse, where Richard died in 1935. The house was sold on 20 Dec 2000.

[Lynne W:] After Joachim Wohlers (my great grandfather) died in 1891, around 1895 Anna Kohrs-Wohlers moved to Manning, Carroll County, Iowa with her stepchildren Augusta and Joachim (Rudolf), and her two children from Joachim, my grandfather Johann (Walter), and his sister Marie.

In 1898, Anna Kohrs-Wohlers married Jakob Rohde, and lived on a farm North of Manning, I believe in Dennison. I do not yet have a marriage date for Anna and Jakob. In 1913 Jakob died, and I believe he is buried in the Manning Cemetery. In 1914, my grandfather, Johann (Walter) Wohlers, his wife Marie Ohde-Wohlers, sister Marie (Bertha) Wohlers, half brother Joachim (Rudolf) Wohlers, and mother Anna Kohrs-Wohlers-Rohde, moved to Scobey, Montana. I believe Augusta stayed in Manning with her husband Peter Henry Dethlefs and family, of which they had four children.

In Scobey, Johann (Walter) built a house for his wife Marie, and the whole family stayed there until moving to California in about 1924. The house my grandfather, Johann (Walter), built for Marie is still standing today. I was there in 1990, and Scobey is but a speck on the map, and in reality a very tiny town, but it is very quaint. The Lutheran Church in town has on the inside, on the walls, a large scroll listing the names of members of the Church and what year they became members. My grandparents' names are there and also Anna Kohrs-Wohlers-Rohde.

[Dethlefsen:] Es soll vor 1949 in Stade einen Bäcker Borgmann gegeben haben, der in Stade-Campe wohnte und ein Nachkomme von Borgmann/Wohlers gewesen sein soll.

Ferner gab es Wilhelm Borgmann, Sohn von 4 [Hinrich] oder 6 [Johann]. Er saß auf dem Hof Borgmann, später von Familie Oelkers, Wilhelmstrasse 21 in Horneburg (Sohn Henry und Ehefrau sowie Eltern leben am 31.12.1991 noch in Horneburg). Nach deren Auskunft gehoerte den Borgmanns das Gelände Reitergeschäft Boehn (1991 zum Verkauf angeboten, Kreuzung Issendorfer Strasse/Stader Strasse), Issendorfer Strasse 25-35a, Obsthof im heutigen "im Stuck". Wilhelm Borgmann 00 die Magd ....Behrens geb. Oelkers, *1888, verwitwet seit 1. Weltkrieg,, Sohn aus 1. Ehe Werner Behrens, zuletzt bekannte Adresse: 2416 Mount Olive Lane, Bradbury/California.

Aus der Ehe Wilhelm Borgmann 00 ....Oelkers verwitwete Behrens gingen keine Kinder hervor.

Nach dem Tod von Wilhelm Borgmann erbte seine Gattin den Besitz.

Die Witwe Borgmann verw. Behrens geb. Oelkers ging in die USA und heiratete dort in 3. Ehe John Baur, ehemals Miller auf dem Marschdamm in Horneburg, letzte bekannte Adresse: 340 West Walnut Ave., Monrovia/California.

Als die Wwe. Borgmann in die USA ging, verwaltete der Schwiegervater von Frau Henry Oelkers, Wilhelmstrasse 21, Horneburg den Besitz seiner Schwester Wwe. Borgmann. Der Besitz sollte wohl an seine Familie übergeben, doch kam Frau Baur verw. Borgmann verw. Behrens geb. Oelkers ca. 1955/1960 zurück nach Deutschland, wollte zunächst hierbleiben, verkaufte den Besitz und ging zurück in die USA, wie es zunächst nicht geplant war. Danach brach der Kontakt zu Familie Oelkers in Horneburg ab.

Der Besitz wurde an Boehn verkauft, der ein Reitergeschaeft darin eroeffnete, sowie an ....(Hoppe ???). Der Verkauf kann eventuell schon 1953 durchgeführt worden sein, denn Ruth und Hans Lenz wollten damals das Gebäude für damals 15000,00 DM kaufen und ein Photogeschäft darin eroeffnen, kauften dann aber das Haus Issendorfer Strasse 44, das um 1910 gebaut wurde und deren erste Besitzerin eine geborene Wohlers gewesen sein soll.
